Global Democracy Initiatives
This project, conducted by Heikki
Patomäki, Mika Rönkkö, and Teivo Teivainen mapped and analyzed the major global
democracy initiatives. There was a particular emphasis on initiatives from the
South. The project resulted in Global
Democracy Initiatives - the Art of Possible NIGD Working paper 2/2002 (issued
in May 2002) and a practical strategy for global democratization.
"No previous book has offered a similar overview of
different global democracy proposals. The books on cosmopolitan democracy by
David Held, Daniele Archibugi and their associates are important theoretical
contributions, but less concrete in their analysis of historical and
institutional contexts. Some edited collections, such as Barry Holden’s Global
Democracy, contain empirically grounded chapters on particular topics, but no
one has published a systematic analysis of the range of initiatives scrutinized
in our book."
