NIGD Research on the Currency Transactions Tax (CTT)
NIGD researchers have issued four publications on the Tobin tax (CTT), a working paper and a discussion paper in English and a book in Finnish. A fourth publication, the book Democratising Globalisation, builds on the other publications, but also brings in a systematic analysis of the powers and liabilities of global financial markets in the first three chapter, and includes a thorough normative argument for the Tobin tax in chapter four. Democratising Globalisation was published by Zed Books in August 2001.
NIGD’s research goes beyond previously published material on the Tobin tax. So far, no one else has presented any systematic model of the technical implementation and administration of the tax; of political strategies for making it real despite the stubborn resistance of many powerful actors; and of the democratic legitimacy needed to organise a global tax regime.
A starting-point for the current discussion is the Draft Treaty on Global Currency Transactions Tax by Heikki Patomäki and Lieven A. Denys. For the current multilingual edition of the Draft Treaty on CTT, go to www.nigd.org/ctt/
