Towards Solving the Debt Problem

In cooperation with Attac Finland, NIGD is continuing this year (2008) with a second project phase on the debt crises. In the first phase 2006-2007 we concentrated on mapping and analyzing the different streams of proposals within civil society for solving the debt problem, and aimed at raising discussions on ways forward in developing new global campaigns.

In the current second phase of the project the discussions have been taken forward towards a new Working Paper "Reviving the global debt movement : the search for a common agenda" which has four themes: repudiation as a strategy?; cancellation and conditionality; arbitration/odious debts and how to organise lending in the future? Each theme is treated by an article and two shorter commentaries. A draft of the publication "Reviving the global debt movement : the search for a common agenda" will be presented at a seminar on 11 September 2008 in Helsinki with an opportunity for further discussion.

A Discussion Paper is available marking the conclusion of the first phase of the project, The global debt campaign: what are the next steps. A Finnish version of the Discussion Paper, Globaalin velkaliikkeen seuraavat askeleet, is available on Attac Finland's website.

Events held within the framework of this project will be announced in due time on  NIGD’s rendezvous page. To learn more about the project, please contact project manager Ruby van der Wekken at nigd@nigd.org.
